Liverpool John Lennon Airport brings both pros and cons for those living in the surrounding areas, from a large amount of business and generation of jobs, to air and noise pollution.

Living near Liverpool Airport...

Airport redevelopment at Liverpool John Lennon is likely to be planned for the future, with the announcement of continued growth plans in the 2003 Government white papers

More information about living in the area...

Since the owners, Peel Holdings, took control of the airport approximately £65 million has been spent on expanding the airport to cope with the increasing numbers of passengers.

Due to even more demand, the Airport Company is now considering the next phase of expansion with future major works to be the subject of a planning application expected to be submitted in 2006.br>
Government policy, set out in the White Paper, 'The Future of Air Transport', endorses the long-term continued growth of Liverpool John Lennon Airport including expansion of its passenger and cargo facilities and the extension of the runway. br>
The Airport is currently compiling its draft Airport Master Plan which will show how the Airport intends to respond to the White Paper's objectives. It will set out how the Airport can capture the opportunity to serve new routes, including long haul destinations, and support Merseyside by capitalising on the prospects to create jobs at the Airport and in the wider Merseyside economy.

Following this consultation the Final Master Plan will be submitted to the Department of Transport in Summer 2006 with a planning application expected to be submitted later in the year to deliver parts of the Master Plan.br>
Should airport development go ahead, air and noise pollution will be a concern for the local Liverpool community.  However, any proposed airport expansion will need to be presented alongside improved operations and landscaping to minimise the effect and environmental concerns would also be carefully considered.br>
Airport expansion however would also create more jobs, act as a hub for regular flyers and also improve Liverpool’s tourist trade, and so could have a positive effect on the local house prices.br>
Airport expansion benefits have been summarised as follows:
  • Good news for the local economy

  • Good news for employees with more jobs created in a range of industries

  • Good news for passengers with more destinations and a greater frequency of flights from local airports

  • Good news for the UK regions ensuring local people and local business have better access to air services.
