Liverpool John Lennon Airport began life with the first scheduled flight leaving Liverpool airport in 1930, however, the airport was officially opened in 1933.
A new passenger terminal was built in the late 1930’s to cope with the increasing passenger numbers.
The airfield was used to test military the military aircraft that were being built nearby during the 2nd World War, and the airport continued to be used by the military until 1961 when it was handed over to the local authority.
Following the new ownership, various improvements were made to the runway in 1966, and in 1986 after the airport had changed hands a few times, a new passenger terminal meant the airport could now expand passenger numbers.
British Aerospace became a majority shareholder in 1990, leading to a £4 million investment in the airport facilities.
Seven years later the airport changed hands once again with Peel Holdings plc buying 76% of the airport shares, with the remaining 24% being acquired in 2001.
Since the Peel Group took control of Liverpool John Lennon Airport, passenger numbers have increased seven fold, with over 4.4 million passengers using Liverpool in 2005.
The Airport is moving up the league table of U.K. airports (12th largest in 2005) and is currently the UK's fastest growing Airport (CAA passenger statistics 2005 for airports above 1 million annual passengers).
A further increase in services and destinations available from the airport is expected to grow passenger numbers from 4.4 million at the end of 2005 to approximately 4.9 million in 2006. |
