Preparing to Leave ...

Airports Information have put together the following information on all sorts of areas covering things such as tips on securing your home before you travel, staying comfortable during the flight and general travel hints and guidelines. So whether you need help on airport parking at Liverpool or are travelling with children or disabilities or special needs read on...

Getting to Liverpool ...

You'll find Liverpool Airport located just south of the city, in the district of Speke. The airport has good links to the city by road, rail, bus & taxi.

You'll easily find the main car park which can be found in front of the terminal building, offering short and long stay car parking.

Visit the ‘Getting to the Airport’ section in this Information Guide for more information on travelling to Liverpool by:

Airport Parking ...

Choose from a good variety of car parking options based on budget, length of stay and level of service required.

A short stay car park is recommended for those persons collecting or dropping off passengers, or for short duration trips.

If travelling for longer than a few days opt for one of two long stay parking options:

Either the traditional long stay car park with a transfer to the airport terminal, or valet meet and greet valet parking.

With meet and greet parking you do not need to worry about a transfer from the car park to the terminal. Just leave the car at a pre-arranged time with the meet and greet company representative at the airport terminal before moving quickly to check in.

It's as simple on your return - your car is delivered back to you at the terminal, from the secure parking compound it has been stored in.

The ultimate hassle free start - and finish - to any holiday or business trip.  Especially good for families with young children, people with heavy bags or sports equipment. Corporate travellers and people with disabilities will find it very convenient.

Do however book valet parking to ensure availability.

Typical meet and greet parking costs £83 for one week and £118 for two weeks, depending on the operator you choose.

There is a Fast Track parking option available from Liverpool Airport.  The under cover Fast Track car park is located within the short stay car park. It offers a quick and cheap link into the terminal.  Expect to pay around £11.00 for 24 hours or part thereof.

Liverpool Airport ...

Proceed straight to check-in when you arrive at the Airport so you can check-in for your flight and deposit your hold baggage so that it can be loaded onto the Aircraft.

Bear in mind that security has increased considerably recently and so has the length of time that it takes to check-in.

Arrive at the Airport in good time before your flight. The following pre-flight arrival times are suggested:

Type Of Flight Check In Time
Long Haul Flights 3 HOURS before departure
European Flights 2 HOURS before departure
UK & Northern Ireland Flights 1 HOUR before departure

At the Airport it is vitally important that you keep your luggage with you at all times, and do not let anyone else carry your bags for you.  Equally, the same applies to your hand luggage.

Don't ever be tempted to look after another passenger's luggage whilst at the Airport. In no circumstances carry anything else onto the Aircraft for another passenger.  If you are asked to do such things by a passenger you do not know alert a member of staff at the Airport, or if you notice any unattended packages.

You will board the aircraft via a boarding gate. These are displayed on boards throughout the departure lounge.  In some Airports, you will need to allow enough time to travel from the departure lounge to your boarding gate as some can take up to 30 minutes to reach the distant gates.

You'll find further information on the security checks at the Airport Safety and Security section within this Fly Guide.

Flying ...

A Plane journey can be boring and uncomfortable - even when you are very excited about arriving - especially when travelling long haul or with children and babies. So with this in mind check out our tips on making the flight comfortable for you and your family.

Hand luggage - it's actually very important to pack this well. Think about what you will need to take in your hand luggage, things you will actually need on the flight, not just your passport, ticket and cash.

Do you or any member of your party take any prescribed medication? Do you need decongestants if you've got a cold? Think about taking a change of top in case of delays, even a toothbrush to help freshen up.

Meals on a plane can be on the small side so it's sometimes worth having a meal before you go. Also take some snacks in case you do get a bit peckish, especially as they can be quite expensive to buy on-board. Do remember that Customs will not allow you to take fruit or dairy products on the Aircraft.

Pack a book, a few magazines and your personal stereo, especially on a long-haul flight in case you don't like the programmes they are showing or you've seen the movie.

Cabin pressure and atmosphere can cause swollen hands and feet so stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and limiting the amount of alcohol you intake. It can also cause dry skin so carry some moisturiser.

If you remove your shoes your feet might feel more comfortable. If you're travelling somewhere hot, think about packing some lightweight sandals or flip flops for when you get off the plane the other end.

You may get cold in the cabin so wear a jumper, that can also double up as a pillow if you want to try and get some sleep.

If you have trouble sleeping on a flight pack some earplugs and an eye mask to block out the normal aircraft and passenger noises.

Should you suffer from travel sickness make sure you have packed remedies, i.e. pills or wrist bands.

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) - it's a serious condition where blood clots develop in the deep veins of the legs. Evidence shows that long-haul flights, especially when passengers have little or no exercise, may increase the risk of developing DVT.

Therefore make a conscious effort to walk around on the flight, especially if travelling on a long-haul journey. Wiggle your toes, stretch out your legs to try and your get blood circulating.

You'll find more advice on DVT like who is more at risk and how to help prevent it on the Department of Health website - click here

The following 'Tips on Staying Comfortable When Flying’ before you travel will help you too.

  Staying Comfortable When Flying
  1. Upgrade A Business Class or First Class upgrade will certainly make any flight a comfortable one. Ask for a complimentary upgrade. .
  2. Front Row Seats The next best thing to an upgrade is to get a front row seat or a seat by an emergency exit as they have extra leg room.
3. Aisle Seats Or try and get an aisle seat so you can occasionally stretch your legs out (as long as you don’t trip up anyone walking down the aisle).  An aisle seat also makes it easier for you to get up and down to stretch your legs, and means you can get to the bathroom without having to climb over other passengers next to you.
4. Pillow Ask a member of the cabin crew for a pillow to help you sleep, and they might even have blankets. You could even buy a blow up neck supporter pillow.  Ear plugs can also help to shut out some of the onboard noises so you can get to sleep easier.
5. Painful Ears Should you suffer from painful ears during take off or landing buy some Earplanes, or a similar brand, which are special ear plugs that equalise the air pressure on each side of the ear drum.  These ear plugs are especially useful if you have a cold or allergy / sinus problems.
6. Dehydration You will get dehydrated when flying so make drink plenty of water during your flight and avoid alcohol if you can.
7. Snacks In-flight meals are small so don't forget to pack some snacks in your hand luggage (although not fruit or dairy products).
8. Anxiety If you think your flight anxiety is too intense and it is worrying you it could be worth talking to your Doctor you could be recommend for something to help keep you calm before and during the flight. Or try learning some breathing exercises. Or try a crossword or get stuck into a good book.

Travelling with Children ...

You can't blame your little ones for getting fidgety and bored on a flight (most of us grown adults do). So if you are travelling with children be sure to pack some small toys in your hand luggage for when you are waiting at the Airport, and for on the aircraft.

Lightweight things like colouring books and crayons, books and sticker books are all great to keep your children amused.  Another good idea is to wrap up the different toys so they can guess what it is.

Nearly all major Airlines offer a child activity pack but they won't last for the length of a long flight so do pack your own things.

Take some toys that you can play with the children too - Connect 4 or Snakes & Ladders.

If you are flying with a young baby make sure you have packed plenty of baby food or formula milk just in case of delays, finger food and nibbles cold water sterilising tablets, nappies and nappy sacks, toys, a blanket from home to help them sleep. Also a change of clothes in case of any accidents and some warm clothes as the cabin does get cold.

Travelling with Disabilities / Special Needs ...

Nowadays you'll find most Airlines are able to assist passengers travelling with disabilities or special needs. It is however worth checking
that any special assistance required is included in the price of the ticket before booking. And before travelling, ensure that the Airline you are flying with is aware of your disabilities or special needs well in advance of your travel dates.

If travelling in a wheelchair passengers may be asked to transfer to an airline wheelchair at check-in.  If you would like to stay in your own wheelchair to boarding, double check with your airline if this is possible before you leave for the airport.

Bear in mind Liverpool Airport is a large building with a huge number of boarding gates, with some timely distances away, so keep an eye out for your boarding gate number and set off in good time.

Available for disabled passengers, or those with special needs, are special assistance vehicles. Passengers should pre-arrange the use of these vehicles to prevent any delays in the airport.
