If you are thinking about taking your mobile phone on holiday read our helpful guide on everything you need (and should know) about taking your mobile phone abroad so you aren't caught out both financially and that your mobile just won't work overseas.

Taking Your Mobile Phone On Holiday...

When taking your mobile phone on holiday there are several things you need to do - you need to activate your phone to work abroad and to make sure you are on the right tariff.

Use the following tips to be prepared for travelling with your mobile phone.

Travelling With Your Mobile Phone ...

When travelling with your mobile phone call your Network provider and ask the following questions:

  • Is your mobile phone enabled for 'International roaming'? It needs to be enabled or it won't work, and it can 14 days so do this well before you travel.

  • Does your handset work in the Country that you are travelling to? I.e. in America a tri-band handset is needed.

  • Ask how much calls from overseas will cost you. These can be very expensive.

  • Ask if there are any deals available that include International roaming calls - this would be beneficial if you travel a lot, but not possibly if you are only planning on travelling just the once for the duration of the phone contract.

Here are the Network providers' customer services numbers:

  UK Network Providers
  O2 0870 225 7879
  Orange 0800 079 0006
T-Mobile 0845 412 5000
Three 08707 330 333
Virgin 0845 6000 789
Vodafone 08700 700 191
Tesco Mobile 0845 301 44 55

Using Your Mobile Phone Abroad ...

Some monthly mobile phone tariffs include International calls. See if there are any deals available, if you are in a position to change tariffs, but do check that this is a cost effective option for you.

Or it could be cheaper to use an alternative International SIM card in your mobile.

These are available at some UK retailers or in International airports. Do check however that the card doesn't have an expiry date that's before your date of travel.

You could buy an International SIM card from SIM for Travel, just click this link:

An electrical adapter for your mobile phone charger - don't forget you'll still need one when taking your mobile phone on holiday.

Making Calls From Abroad...

Do you know why it costs so much to make International calls? Well here's why...

... when travelling with your mobile and you arrive at your overseas destination so you simply turn your phone on as normal. Your mobile phone on holiday will lock into a local phone transmitter.

So International roaming is enabled, your Network provider knows you are on holiday. Well your call, say if you were in France calling a UK friend also in France, would travel a whopping 1,800 miles! That's because your UK phone is routed via the UK.

Important Emergency Numbers...

When taking your mobile phone on holiday add the following numbers into the address book just in case of any emergencies:

  • Your travel insurance provider's contact numbers

  • Telephone number of your Hotel / Tour Operator
  • Telephone number of the nearest British Embassy to where you are going to be staying

Important Numbers - Government Offices and Agencies
  Foreign & Commonwealth Office Enquiries +44 (0) 207 008 1500
  Services for Briton’s overseas +44 (0) 207 008 0210
Travel Advice +44 (0) 845 850 2829

Overseas Security Measures ...

Before you go away jot down your own mobile number, your phone's serial number, known as the IMEI number, and the number of your Network provider's customer services department (including UK dialling code). Put this in a separate place to where you keep your phone. It's also worth contacting your Network provider to see if they need any other information like a password for instance.

Then, if your mobile is lost or stolen you can arrange immediately for your Network provider to block or cancel your mobile.

If you want cover for your mobile phone when on holiday make sure your travel insurance policy actually covers your phone as many don't.
